Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Although there are many stories about the Coronavirus COVID-19 in the daily papers and on the news at the moment, the risk to the general public still remains low to medium. As Oxfordshire County Council and other advisory groups have contacted Acquire Care Ltd. about the virus, it is wished to pass on some of the advice received. The British Government has produced an action plan that can be viewed at: www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus which is interesting reading.

The NHS website also has information about the virus which is very informative and can be seen at https://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/coronavirus-covid19/

These websites will be updated frequently.

As there is no specific treatment for coronavirus currently, the main advice given is that prevention is the best way forward at the moment. Therefore:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not hands) when you cough or sneeze.
  • Put used tissues in the bin immediately.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for approximately 20 seconds whenever necessary – use hand sanitiser if soap and water are not available.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands if they are not clean.

By following these simple steps, a huge difference in the fight against common colds, flu and the coronavirus COVID-19 will be made. The main symptoms of virus are a cough, a high temperature and, in severe cases, shortness of breath. The majority of people with the virus have recovered without the need for any specific treatment, as is the case for the common cold or seasonal flu.

Here at Acquire Care, the Management and the Staff are taking prevention very seriously. Other recommendations that are being suggested are:

  • Do not shake hands when greeting or leaving people.
  • Do not greet or leave them with a kiss.
  • Look out for elderly loved ones and those in your community with the aim to keep them safe and help them if necessary, remembering the isolated and vulnerable.
  • Discuss with household members, other relatives, friends and neighbours about what to do if a COVID-19 outbreak occurs in your community and what the needs of each person will be.
  • Share phone numbers and/or email addresses. This could include an emergency list of family, friends, neighbours, healthcare providers, teachers, employers, the local public health department, and other community support or resources.
  • Consider having a ‘buddy’ system within your community to ensure everyone stays connected to COVID-19 related news, services and can receive support safely, such as essential deliveries.
  • Plan ways to care for those who might be at greater risk for serious complications.
  • Choose a room in your home that can be used to separate household members from those that are healthy.
  • Learn how to self-isolate. Guidance can be found on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/
  • Create a list of local organisations that you and your neighbours can contact in the event that someone needs access to information, healthcare services, support or resources.
  • Learn about the emergency operations plan at your child’s school or childcare facility.
  • Practice everyday preventative actions including regular hand washing.
