Campaign Against Loneliness

Many elderly people do not speak to anyone all week; not even a ‘hello’ or ‘how are you today’? Many people live alone and are vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Age UK, have been trying to inform the public about this for sometime, and this month they are being helped by a major confectionery manufacturing company to make everyone aware of this huge problem.

Cadbury are changing the packaging on their Dairy Milk chocolate bars. By removing the words on the wrappers, Cadbury are making a thought-provoking campaign for Age UK. The special wrappers will not have words on them but instead have the two pouring glasses logo. For every chocolate bar sale, Cadbury will donate 30p to Age UK. No longer do we need an excuse to eat chocolate!

As well as buying these chocolate bars, we can all help in other ways to prevent loneliness. Remember that a few words can make all the difference to someone who is lonely. As Cadbury’s campaign says ‘Donate your words’. Age UK suggests the following:

  • If you see someone sitting down (or standing) on their own, do not ignore them. Instead, be friendly and say a few words to them. It doesn’t have to be long but a quick chat can brighten someone’s day.
  • Have you phoned your Mother, uncle or an older friend recently? Maybe they would love to hear from you but do not ring you in case they are being a bother. Why not take the initiative and call to see how they are?
  • Do you have an older neighbour living close by? Why not call in and see how they are? We all remember to ask neighbours if we can help when the snow has been falling or the electricity has been unexpectedly cut off but what about some of the other days of the year? Just a friendly smile and a few words are bound to be welcome.

Sometimes, elderly people do need more help than a few words to stop loneliness and to help them live easier in their own homes. This is when Acquire Care Ltd. might be able to help. We can provide helpful friendly care to people who need support to live in their own homes. This can be from short home care visits to care with one of our carers living in the client’s house.
